| A house was built in 1786 for William Read. It had been designed by John Carr with two storeys in white brick with a large projecting bay overlooking 100 acres of rolling parkland. The house and estate passed to the Rev Thomas Cutler Rudson, who in accordance with the will added the additional surname of Read. When he died in 1838 the estate was sold to James Walker, 1st Baronet. In 1839-41 Anthony Salvin extended the hall at a cost of £1500 and returned in 1851-52 to further enlarge the house. The Hall was illustrated in 'The Builder' of 1881 (Not Seen). After inheriting the estate in 1883 the 2nd Baronet largely rebuilt the house during 1885-87 to its final form with a large addition to the North. It now had 54 rooms. The marority of the Sand Hutton estate, some 2400 acres, but not the house, was sold to the Church Commission in 1936. During WWII the Hall was requisitioned for use of Polish and English servicemen. The Walker family eventually sold the house in 1955, soon afterwards on 7-8 June 1955 the Hall was autioned off in two lots including 1000 yards of excellent turf. The southern half was demolished for materials and the northern part, with the tower survived as flats until 1971 when it was finally demolished. | |

Believed to be a 'Rent Dinner'. Tenants were required to pay their rents twice a year and this was turned into an occation. They were not allowed into the Hall but were provided with a dinner in the marquee. Sir Robert and Lady Esme are seated in the front centre. Many of the tenants seen here will have used the railway.
