Initially used as a mainline engine between Newcastle and Edinburgh or Leeds with WWI restricting construction of new locomotives the Class could not be withdrawn from service and they ended their days on local passenger services. No. 910 eventually retired in 1925.
An innovation on these engines was a device to reduce coal consumption. The driver could divert some of the locomotive's exhaust from the chimney to underneath the cylinders. This softened the blast at the chimney, reducing the draw on the fire and using less coal as a result

Aerolite, 1869 to 1902. Compound Tank locomotive No. 66 of the North Eastern Railway.

Aerolite was built in 1869 as a 2-2-2 well tank locomotive.

It was rebuilt and enlarged three times. Once in 1886 when this picture was taken.

(Unknown)

During the rebuild in 1892 the wheel arrangement was changed to 4-2-2T and the locomotive given compound cylinders. In this arrangement the steam was taken to a single high pressure cylinder of 13 inch diameter and then to a second low pressure cylinder of 18 1/2 inch diameter where further useful work could be performed by the steam.

(Unknown)

In the final rebuild in 1902 the wheel arrangement was changed again to 2-2-4 to allow for a larger coal bunker.

In this form it survived in service until 1933, based at Darlington and was used for hauling the Chief Assistant Mechanical Engineer's official inspection saloon.

Aerolite is preserved at the NRM York. Click HERE for modern pictures of her.
