JACK

Jack is one of only 14 locomotives built in the 18inch gauge by the Hunslet Engine Co. and was unusual in that it left the works painted in 'Midland Red' rather than the usual olive green because the buyer, John Knowes & Sons (Wooden Box) Ltd. of Burton on Trent had track running close to the Midland Railway lines. Jack was built in 1898, engine number 684 with cylinders 6.5in x 8in. For extra stability Jack has a well tank and its gearing outside the frame; probably the first Hunslet locomotive to do so. After retirement in 1958 Jack was bought by Leeds Musuems & Galleries and restored in 1980 at Bradford Industrial Museum. He can currently (2010) be seen at the Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills.
